Aged paper gives junk journals, vintage scrapbooks and decoupage a warm, handled look, as if the pages came from an old trunk. You can age printable paper after printing with tea, coffee, ink and a few edge techniques. This guide explains how to age printable paper step by step, which methods suit inkjet and laser prints, and which patterns look best aged.
Print first, age second
Always age after printing. Paper that has been wet and dried is wavy and can jam a printer. Print from the Letter or A4 PDF on 24 to 32 lb text paper or a light cardstock; very heavy cardstock takes a long time to dry and stays stiff.
Inkjet or laser? Laser prints are water-resistant and handle tea and coffee baths well. Most inkjet prints run when wet, so for inkjet use the dry methods below, or seal the print with a light coat of clear acrylic spray first and test on a spare sheet.
Method 1: tea staining
- Brew strong black tea with several bags and let it cool.
- Lay the printed sheet on a baking tray and brush or sponge tea over it. Dab darker spots with a wet tea bag.
- Crumple the sheet gently while damp for extra texture, then flatten it.
- Dry flat on a towel, or in a low oven on a tray for a few minutes while you watch it closely.
- Press under heavy books overnight.
Method 2: coffee staining
Instant coffee mixed strong gives a darker, browner tone than tea. Sprinkle a few dry granules on the wet sheet for speckles. It works well on kraft-toned and farmhouse patterns.
Method 3: distress ink and edges (inkjet-safe)
- Rub brown distress ink or a brown ink pad around the edges with a blending tool or sponge.
- Tear edges by hand instead of cutting, or scrape them with the blade of scissors.
- Crumple the sheet tightly, smooth it out, then ink lightly over the creases so they show.
Method 4: digital aging before you print
For an aged look with no mess, place the paper in Canva or a photo app and add a warm overlay or a paper texture at low opacity before printing. Our Canva guide shows how to layer images. This keeps your printer and the paper flat.
Which patterns age well
Patterns with cream or warm backgrounds, florals, ledgers, stripes and folk motifs look naturally vintage once aged. Bright modern colors can look muddy. Packs we would use:
